The Lazy Girl’s Guide: The Ultimate Summer Skin, Hair and Beauty Routine

Written by Nicole Enberg Vaz

After what felt like an eternally cold spring, summer has finally arrived. Longer days mean endless sunshine, backyard BBQs and lazy weekends lounging at the beach, lake or local park. Summer is the time to simplify and streamline our daily routines. Yes, summer is the time for relaxation, but we also face the challenge of humid temperatures, air pollution, long flights and too many glasses of wine that can wreak havoc on our complexion, hair and overall well-being. When the weather heats up, don’t stress! All you truly need are a few key staples to look and feel your best. Below are some tried-and-true products that allow you to make the most of your day, without the risk of a summer beauty disaster. As the saying goes, less is always more…

SKIN

The warm weather months can do a real number on your skin. And when the temperature soars, no woman wants to fuss about with a ton of products or worry about sunburn. Simplify your skin routine with these three easy products (which are also suitable for the rest of the year!).

Cetaphil : Dermatologists recommend this non-foaming cleanser for a reason. It makes dry/oily/sensitive/aging skin all equally happy. When you rinse off this soap-free gel, your skin will thank you. Your face will feel instantly cleaner without the risk of irritation. Cetaphil is fool-proof, inexpensive and available at any drugstore. And the best part? If you don’t have access to water for some reason, (camping, anyone?), you can wipe off the cleanser with a tissue. Easy.

Vitamin C Serum : Vitamin C is clinically proven to help our skin combat environmental stressors like smog, city grime and oppressive heat. Obagi Professional-C Serum and SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic Acid are two best-selling products that have been a godsend in my life. Both liquid serums add a weightless antioxidant barrier to your skin, protecting your face from the sun while preventing dreaded fine lines and sun spots.

Insider tip: Make sure to apply sunscreen to your face after using these skin enhancers every, single day. If you skip this critical step, a Vitamin C serum will do absolutely nothing to protect your skin.

SPF 50 Facial Sunscreen : This is the most important skincare essential. The women in my family have been using SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50 for years because it’s the best. The protective zinc oxide SPF fights UVA/UVB rays while staying super light on the skin. Physical Fusion UV Defense also comes with a slight tint to “enhance natural skin tone,” which means no makeup is necessary. That’s a big bonus when it’s 100 degrees outside. Not only is this sunscreen water resistant, it’s also paraben free, which means your skin is less likely to freak out if you have sensitivities to new products. I use this product every day of the year because it protects, moisturizes and keeps my skin healthy. In fact, I now stock up on SkinCeuticals SPF online – and I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.

HAIR

People fall into two different hair camps in the summertime: oily and flat or dry and brittle. Unfortunately, many of us tend to experience both. Whether you are fighting greasy city locks or dehydrated strands from too much fun in the ocean, these two products will come to your rescue.

Dry Shampoo — Miracle of miracles. Whether you’re camping, getting off a long flight or just want a touch up before going out on a steamy evening, dry shampoo is summer’s main must-have. Over the past few years, countless companies have rolled out their unique versions of dry shampoo for all hair types. We have tried them all, but only one gets the job done: Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo. What sets this spray apart from everything else on the market? According to Living Proof’s website, “Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo contains fast-absorbing powders that soak up oil and sweat. It also contains a patented OFPMA molecule that reduces the surface friction on hair—leaving virtually no visible residue or powdery build-up—making it easy to remove the powder.” Essentially, this product is the equivalent of a shower in a can. Just spray on your roots and leave on hair for 60 seconds. Flip your hair upside down, brush through, and voila, perfect hair. Even the flattest locks will be revived, guaranteed.

Organic Coconut Oil – Available at any drugstore, market or natural foods store, organic coconut oil is a multi-purpose beauty wonder. Just a tiny scoop of this solid oil is all you need to recharge your hair after a long day at the beach or swimming pool. Simply put your hair in a ponytail and rub the oil along your strands focusing on the ends, avoiding the scalp. Leave coconut oil on hair for 15-30 minutes and rinse away for instant shine.

MAKEUP

No one wants to fuss with a ton of cosmetics in the summer, especially when any product you apply is likely to slide off your face anyway. Pare down your beauty regime with these summer standbys and let your natural beauty radiate.

Gel Cheek Stain – In the summer months, everyone wants a rosy glow. Powder tends to just slide off your face or fade due to sweat, water and sunshine. Enter Josie Maran’s Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelee, a hydrating, glowing gel that gives cheeks a natural boost of color with staying power. Available in six shades, this gel blush creates buildable color for a fresh, flushed look suitable for day or night. Bonus: This product also works as a nice lip stain if you want color without the hassle of lipstick.

Lengthening Mascara – Mascara is like the fairy godmother of cosmetics. This simple tube has the power to transform your eyes, creating definition and fluttery lashes with a flick of a wand. While there are tons of options on the market, Benefit’s They’re Real! Lengthening Mascara delivers. The name says it all. The special formula sticks to lashes to create instant length, depth and volume, without fake-looking clumps or flakes. This mascara delivers the natural look we crave in the summer, with a little extra oomph.
